A. Samuel Louis

Vancouver BC | V6R 3M1

About me

Samuel Louis began his piano study with Grace and Dietmar Schmuecker before moving to London to study with Douglas Finch, Philip Fowke, and Patsy Toh, where he gained his Master of Music at King’s College London.

Sam has won various awards such as the first prize of "Il Circolo" Competition at the Italian Cultural Centre, Piano Transcription Competition, and has given recitals throughout UK and Canada, including twice for Yamaha Artist Service Europe at Chappell, London, and "Ronald Stevenson at 80" event at St. John's Smith Square, which he played a solo recital and a performance of Ronald Stevenson's Piano Concerto No.1 in the presence of the composer.

Sam has participated in many masterclasses given by world-renown artists such as Dina Parakhina, Nelita True, Angela Hewitt, Leslie Howard, Joseph Banowetz, Anton Kuerti, and Murray McLachlan. He frequently performs with his duo partner Mansoon Bow, including a performance of complete Schumann Violin Sonatas at Pheonix Hall, Osaka.

Sam is also an enthused conductor. He has given several performances with an orchestra of his own in Canada. He conducted a production of "La Finta Giardiniera" by Mozart with the opera company 'Opera at Home', which gave many performances at venues such as the Reform Club London and Greenwich Playhouse in 2010.

As a teacher, Sam served two years as musician-in-residence at Sevenoaks School in UK from 2011 to 2013, where he held a variety of responsibility such as piano teaching, theory teaching, exam accompanying, choral conducting and accompanying, music class teaching, aural training, etc. He also taught piano, improvisation, theory, and history privately for more than 10 years to students of all level from beginner to young professional and adult amateur.

Sam believes that music is a way to obtain higher achievement in life, and every student deserves an individualized approach to learn music. Sam believes that the most important aim in music teaching is to spark the imagination and inspire creativity in the student, thence the student will enjoy and cherish the gift of music. Sam teaches every student with a vision in mind that, twenty years after, when the student becomes a fully-grown adult, he/she would enjoy classical music, go to concert, and make music with pleasure and ability.

In pedagogy, Sam generally starts with the Faber series for young children between age 3-6, and move on to RCM grade system. In the meantime, Sam would allow time in the lesson for the student to explore and work on music of their desire, and develop together with them, thus to form a healthy and interactive relationship in making music.
