About me

I started teaching piano in 2001 (full-time since 2002). Even though I studied piano throughout my childhood, it wasn't my first career choice. Teaching came after careers in arts administration, special events, and communications and remains my primary career focus.

I studied piano at university and became the first person to graduate from my alma mater with a combined Bachelor of Arts in Music & Bachelor of Business Management. I later went on to pursue my ARCT in Piano Performance through the Royal Conservatory of Music and Level 7 in Conservatory Canada's Contemporary Idioms curriculum, earning First Class Honours in both.

My performing career began as a student in the early 1980s. Since then, I have performed as a solo pianist as well as a collaborative musician, namely voice and piano, violin and piano, chamber music, and choral music. In addition to piano, I play the cajón, melodica, ukulele, and sing.

In June 2013, I was named Tech Teacher of the Year by Roland Canada, Music for Young Children and Conservatory Canada. Technology is embraced in the studio, through the use of music education apps, sound recording software such as Audacity, and OpenShot to put together our virtual choir and ensemble projects.

I embrace a process-based teaching philosophy. Although some students do take examinations, they don't have to. The focus is helping my students build their "musician's toolbox" as they explore a wide variety of musical styles. Through a combination of private lessons and group classes, they learn to read standard notation as well as lead sheets, improvise as well as pick out melodies by ear, play solo or in an ensemble setting with family and friends.

My vision is to prepare them for any musical situation so that they may enjoy making music for many years to come.
