About me

Tia Wood is a private piano instructor, accompanist, and classical/jazz event musician in the DC/Northern VA area. She is a graduate of Grove City College with a major in Music/Business and a piano concentration. Tia has taught piano lessons for the past 8 years, accompanied for 4 years, and played wedding, graduation, and dinner party gigs for 5 years.

During her college career, Tia served as the Vice President and Treasurer of the college Chamber & Symphonic Orchestra and interned at the Alexandria Symphony Orchestra over the summer. She was a Music Department Staff Assistant, planning recitals and collaborating with faculty to improve the music department. Tia was an accomplished classical musician--competing in a concerto competition, frequently learning challenging repertoire, and seeking to raise awareness of the benefits of classical music as a whole on campus.

Currently, in addition to frequently gigging solo, Tia enjoys playing keyboard with other musicians. She has played in multiple coffeehouses over the past few years, has collaborated with lyricists, and has played keyboard in her church band for 8 years.

Specialties

I specialize in teaching younger beginners as well as older students who have taken piano lessons for a few years. I emphasize ear training and improvisational skills from a young age, and my teaching philosophy is structured around the importance of confidence in performing as a way to enjoy the piano and help others enjoy it as well.

Lesson details

I conduct lessons in 30, 45, and 60 minute increments. Lessons begin with technical training and theory teaching, then move to performance evaluation. They end with alternation of ear training, improvisational skills, or note identification practice.
