About me

I had an interest in music from an early age. I am the youngest of 4 children. All my siblings and both of my parents played piano, another instrument and sang, so it was only natural that I would become involved in music. I started piano lessons when I was 5 years old, and later added french horn, voice and alto horn. When I went to college, I was a member of 3 different choirs, marching band, french horn ensemble and 2 music honoraries all while being a psychology major. After I graduated, I sang in the Columbus Symphony Chorus, a Baroque chamber choir, a church choir and played with the Ohio State Alumni Band. I began to realize that music was more than a hobby for me; it was a way of life. So, I went back to school and got a music education degree. Upon graduating, I began teaching voice and piano full time. I have owned my own studio since 1996 and have loved helping students discover their musical gifts.

Specialties

Every student is different and learns differently, so I try to discover each student's personality so I can understand how I should approach teaching them.

Lesson details

I teach private voice and piano lessons. With voice, my specialty is really helping the student develop a healthy technique, building their voice as it matures. I also am very good at helping students improve their sight singing, since many choirs in our area require students to be solid sight readers. In piano lessons, my goal is to help each student read music easily, and then I try to find music that will help them become better readers as well as music that motivates them to play more.

Education and Accreditation

Bachelor of Science in Psychology, The Ohio State University; Bachelor of Music Education, The Ohio State University. I have been a member of the National Association for Music Education as well as The Ohio Music Education Association (for which I have served as both a vocal and piano judge); I also am a member of Columbus Teachers and The National Federation of Music Clubs. Many of my students participate in the Junior Festival for the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs as well as Ohio Music Education Association's Solo and Ensemble Contest. I have also been a solo performer with Women in Music Columbus.
