About me

I am a multi-instrumentalist with over 10 years of high-volume studio teaching experience. I have taught many programs and styles over the years, including RCM and Music for Young Children.

I have taken classical and folk music lessons on a variety of instruments. I have 17 years of experience playing in community groups, chamber ensembles and pop groups playing percussion, bass, keyboards and ukulele. I have just as many years experience singing in choirs and pop groups. I was a church organist for several years.

At university, I studied contemporary composition, which included electroacoustic music. I do my own recordings and production and have done sound design and composition for film and live theater.

Due to my current studio setup, I am only taking students between the ages of 3 and 5 years in group classes and teaching keyboard based preschool music classes. The lessons are not from a franchise giving me the freedom to tailor the lessons to the needs of the students. I cover sight singing, rhythm, ear training, and staff reading, starting with the conventional beginner methods and transitioning into the proper terminology used in the RCM and Westernboard curriculum. My goal with the classes is to prepare young students to transition easily into private classical music lessons on any instrument once they have enough dexterity to handle the technical requirements.

I believe passionately that in order to develop ones musical skills and become a truly useful musician, children must start playing together at a young age, and I therefore encourage duet playing with all of my students.

I have a very relaxed demeanor and, though recitals are mandatory, I make sure that they are casual and fun. First and foremost, it is my goal to teach children to enjoy playing music and to have confidence in themselves.

I specialize in RCM, composition and beginners of all ages.

Lesson details

- Group lessons for children aged 3-5 with parent participation -

These lessons contain the Kodalay and Orff Methods, teaching young students to hear, read and understand music with ease at an earlier age. They will then learn to count music properly with numbers and read treble clef and bass clef well enough to transition into a classical program.
The length of the lessons will depend on the ages of the students in the class.
