Dr. Michael Park

Vancouver BC | V6K 2B8

About me

I am a composer, pianist, organist, music director, and educator. I've studied piano and composition in Winnipeg, London, and Vancouver, and now play an active role in Vancouver's classical and new music scene. I am the Artistic Director and principal pianist of Erato Ensemble, where I play a few concerts a year, and take great pleasure in making music with others. I spend many hours each week playing piano for dance classes, where I get to practice my skills as a master improviser. In all my work, I try to help people connect with and through music. I have taught a wide variety of piano students, from beginners to advanced players.

My own path to learning music was a varied and exciting one, and I can't wait to help new students along their own journeys.

Michael's piano-teaching style can be described as Cognitive-Gestural. By integrating thought (active cognition) into otherwise muscular (gestural) playing, the student benefits greatly in areas such as speed of learning, memory, musical understanding, healthy pianistic technique, and musicality.

As a teacher, Michael is energetic, positive, and upbeat. In addition to piano lessons, he also teaches musicianship and the history/harmony co-requisites for all levels of RCM studies.

As a composer, Michael's teaching style values creativity. For interested students, IMPROVISATION and COMPOSITION can be integrated into piano lessons, or taught as stand-alone subjects.

As music director for Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Michael also has access to a grand piano and beautiful pipe organ for advanced students who wish to take their studies beyond the music studio.
