About me

MUSICIAN/ARTIST
Michael started playing the piano by ear at the age of three. His mother was not
aware of his gift of music until the neighbor told her of this. He heard his first song,
“When the Saints Go Marching In” on the radio and began to play what he heard.
Mom heard him and knew he had the talent to continue. She began nurturing his music
by singing more songs such as “Alley Cat”, “Cab Driver” and more. She began giving him a nickel for every song that he could repeat back.
Piano lessons started when he was in the second grade living in Lincoln,
Nebraska and Michael found that he could sight read quickly. His love for music then
brought him on the path of percussion including xylophone, marimba and vibraphone.
He studied percussion with Andrew Fisher and Floyd Thompson with the Minnesota
Orchestra.
Throughout his high school years Michael performed in concert bands, wind
ensembles, jazz bands and marching bands. He performed his first xylophone solo in
the eighth grade [Rimsky-Korsokoff’s “Galloping Comedians”] and received his first
standing ovation. Michael then took on the task of Paul Creston’s Suite for Marimba and Orchestra performing with the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony. During his University years Michael worked with the likes of Doc Severenson, Buddy Rich, Steve Fisher and many more talented international artists.
He spent the last 25 years working as an Executive Creative Director for such
companies as Wal-Mart, Metro Goldwyn-Mayer and Coca-Cola. He also worked for Target Corporation where he was awarded a Clio for his design work and then went on to work for The Walt Disney Company.  Both as Creative Director of branding and packaging. His creative work has been published in Communication Arts, AIGA, Prints Regional Design Annual, Buttenpapeirfabrik Award for Printing, and A Decade of Type. His artwork has been displayed in museums throughout Minnesota, the U.S. and Europe.
Michael uses the stage name Mikala Logan Thomas as there are thousands of
Michael Thomas’ out in the world making it difficult to “Google” his name. Mikala has
returned to the performance stage after a 25 year hiatus. In May 2015 he performed
piano and vibraphone with Katherine Wilson in a musical review entitled, “...a little bit of
JAZZ and a whole lot of BROADWAY.”
He currently plays with the East Hawaii All-Star Jazz Ensemble. He has worked
with KDEN, PALC and University of Hawaii at Hilo’s Theater Department. And has
accompanied many vocalist’s on the Big Island of Hawaii. He is currently asking the
universe for direction on producing his first debut recording. Any suggestions on style
of music and/or types of songs to be captured on acoustic piano would be greatly
appreciated.

MIKE’S PIANO LESSONS
He teaches piano and percussion in the Wainaku area of Hilo, Hawaii. And
coordinates a student recital every two years where his students learn the art of
