About me

I hold a BM in Piano Performance from Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC. I graduated cum laude in 1976 with awards in both music theory and composition.
I have maintained a successful private studio since, teaching all levels and ages, from 5 to adult.

I also worked as the director of the Salem College Community School for six years from 1996-2003.

In addition to teaching full-time, I also am an internationally published composer of teaching literature. My publishers include: Frederick Harris, Summy Burchard, and Willis. Many of my pieces have won awards for composition and have been used on various contests lists. I have given workshops in the U.S. and Canada on both literature and the use of composition in the studio to teach practical theory and creative musical thinking.

I am an active member of the national, state and local MTNA organizations and currently serve as president of the Greensboro Music Teacher's Association.

I also adjudicate at area festival events.

My philosophy in teaching has always been to help students learn how to read and understand music in order to develop a lifetime skill and love of all music. Music has always made such perfect sense to me. It is easy for me to explain it to others. I run an efficient studio with a studio keyboard lab and access to an at-home website. I try to make music study fun and varied with games and incentives. I use the MTNA sponsored Music Achievement Award Program to document student growth. Students have opportunities for performance and composition. I teach year round. In the summer we break from the lesson books to record student music on CD's and explore a particular area of music - for example -Duets or Popular music. I also offer a program for parents of students in the summer as a refresher or beginner course.

I teach all areas of musicianship and believe theory is crucial in understanding music. Although performance is the ultimate goal, true growth comes in understanding what you are doing and being able to take that knowledge into the next piece that you study. Mindless manipulation of the keys is only a fleeting accomplishment.

Lesson details

I have a series of technic levels that are covered at the student's individual pace. I give a yearly sightreading test and theory quiz to mark student growth in a tangible way. We cover both standard literature and a variety of supplimentary pieces to gain fluency in reading and preparation for performance pieces. I encourage memorizing throughout the year, so that when performance time comes, students know how to meet those goals as well.

I offer both 30 and 45 minute private lessons. Students are invited to come in 15 minutes early or stay 15 minutes after and work independantly at my keyboard/computer lab. I offer a wide variety of ear-training and theory programs throughout the year.
