About me

Korean American pianist Soohyung Yoo has performed for audiences throughout the U.S.,Canada, and Europe, at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall in New York, Academy of Music in Philadelphia, and Salle Cortot in Paris. She has been a prizewinner of several international competitions, including the Bradshaw & Buono International Piano Competition, International Young Artists Piano Competition, Pinault International Competition,and Artist International Presentations, which resulted to a successful debut recital at Weill Hall in Carnegie Hall in 2009.

Soohyung began her piano studies in Korea at the age of 7, and continued her studies in the United States with Eleanor Sokoloff until her entrance to the prestigious Eastman School of Music. She received her Bachelors and Masters degrees at Eastman under the guidance of Thomas Schumacher, as a recipient of the Howard Hanson Scholarship, Etta Miller Award, and a Graduate Assistant in Accompanying. She continued her training in Europe through the International Certificate for Piano Artists program held by the Ecole Normal de Musique de Alfred Cortot and Fondation Belle 'Arte with artistic director Nelson Delle Vigne and president Phllipe Entremont. She has performed in masterclass with renown pianists such as Alicia DeLarrocha, Lazar Berman, Gary Graffman, Jerome Lowenthal, and Francois Duchable. Soohyung continued her studies at the University of Maryland where she obtained her Doctor of Musical Arts degree with Larissa Dedova in December of 2009.

Soohyung has been on the piano faculty at Frederick College, University of Maryland, and has maintained an active private piano studio. She is currently on the faculty at Los Angeles County High School for the Arts and makes her home in Pasadena, CA with her husband and cat.

Lesson details

An avid teacher, Soohyung has more than 10 years of experience in teaching piano. She enjoys watching her students grow as musicians and tries to plant in each of them a love for music that will stay with them throughout their lives. Her teaching stresses proper development in technique, music reading and interpretation, which are crucial in furthering one's development. Method books often used include Faber, Hal Leonard, and Alfred editions. Theory and classical piano pieces will frequently be added to the lessons.

Soohyung is a member of Music Teachers Association of California. Interested and eligible students may prepare for exams, and have the opportunity to take part in recitals throughout the year.
