Shifra Day

Vancouver BC | V5S 2J6

About me

Shifra, born and raised in metro Vancouver, has returned to the coast after working and studying in Montreal and Ottawa. She received both her Master's and Bachelor's degrees with a major in piano performance and secondary studies in viola. Her Master of Music was completed under full scholarship at the University of Ottawa studying with David Jalbert. Her Bachelor of Music was completed with distinction at the University of Victoria. After her time in Ottawa, Shifra studied for two years in Montreal under the renowned artist Andre Laplante. She has won many scholarships and awards, including third prize at the Knigge Piano Competition in 2012. Shifra has played in the viola sections of various orchestras such as Orchestre de la Francophonie and Orchestre Symphonie de Gatineau. As a pianist she accompanies instrumentalists, singers and choirs in and around her various cities--Montreal, Ottawa, Victoria and Vancouver. Other accomplishments include radio performances broadcast on the program Le Conservatoire en Ondes, a publication in the Canadian Music Educator (2009) and for her studies in French, an Official Languages Study Fellowship from the BC Ministry of Education.

Teaching:
Shifra is enthusiastic about teaching both of her instruments to students of all ages. She is an experienced classical musician and believes in developing both strong technical freedom at the instrument as well as musical and theoretical understanding and appreciation. A positive, organized, patient and encouraging teacher, Shifra enjoys finding the most effective learning methods for each student. She introduces concepts and inspires students by guiding them through challenges and by sharing the excitement of finding solutions.

During her Master's she taught the Piano Proficiency course at the University of Ottawa. With 7 years of teaching experience, she has taught students of all ages and levels at local music schools and community centres, summer programs and privately.
