About me

I have been playing both percussion and piano for over 30 years, performing professionally for over 20 years, and teaching professionally for over 15 years. In addition to performing with several orchestras in the New Jersey area, I am the owner and founder of Martin Music Studio, through which I teach private lessons on piano, drums and all percussion instruments at people's homes all over central New Jersey.

I believe that the most important thing in a student - teacher relationship is trust. The teacher earns the student's trust by being prompt and consistent in lesson attendance, always being patient with questions and mistakes, giving fair and honest evaluations of progress, and never using intimidation or ridicule as a teaching tool. The student earns the teacher's trust by being consistent and prompt in lesson attendance, listening carefully and asking any questions that may come up during the lesson, and practicing thoughtfully and consistently between lessons.

My goal in teaching is to provide my students with the best music education possible, to help them reach their full potential, and to encourage them to create their own musical experiences through performance and concert attendance. Each of my students has the opportunity to perform solos or chamber music at my annual studio recital. My more advanced drum and percussion students also have opportunities to perform with the orchestras I play in, when we need extra percussionists.

I offer private lessons at people's homes, on piano, drums and all percussion instruments, to students of all ages and ability levels.

Lesson details

I work through method books with my students to ensure that they get a very solid grasp of all aspects of music theory, solo and ensemble performance practice. I take great care to work at each student's pace, and to make sure they stay challenged and motivated, but also that they have mastered each concept before moving ahead. I supplement the music in the method books with appropriate music from the repertoire. I also encourage my students to perform in my annual studio recital and to take Royal American Conservatory grade level exams.

Education and Accreditation

I completed a Bachelor of Music degree at University of Alberta from 1986-1990 studying with Brian Jones, a Drum Set Performance degree at Grant MacEwan College from 1990-1992 studying with Brian Thurgood, and a Master of Music degree at Rutgers University from 1992-1994 studying with William Moersch.
