About me
I have been teaching piano and other music courses for over 8 years, and have completed my degree with the University of British Columbia in Music. I teach lessons customized to the goals of the student, whether that involves Royal Conservatory, Canada Conservatory, or not. I believe in the comprehensive study of music and the arts, and that awareness of the world around you, especially in the arts world, begins in our weekly lessons.
I teach students as young as three as well as adults. I also teach the program Music for Young Children. My MYC website is here: www.myc.com/teacher/RJacob
Outside of teaching I am involved in an improvised music collective, write and perform my own songs, host a radio show on CiTR 101.9FM, play in a Balinese Gamelan Orchestra, play in a Tango band, and run workshops on sound improvisation and contemporary composers.
Specialties
Outside of the canonical piano teaching styles, I have been designing programs dedicated to educating young people about contemporary music. These programs include techniques of improvisation, compositional techniques of contemporary composers, and exercises to improve listening skills.
Lesson details
Lessons are either half an hour or one hour long, depending on the level of the student and as well as her or his age. The lessons will be structured based on the needs and goals of the student.
Education and Accreditation
I have received my ARCT with the Royal Conservatory in both Performance and Teaching. I have also received my Bachelors of Music through UBC, studying with pianist Terence Dawson. I am MYC Certified. (Music for Young Children.)
I often collaborate with Vancouver New Music in producing Sonic Playground, a workshop series for children.
