About me

I have been teaching piano and other music courses for 10 years, and have completed my Bachelor of Music degree with the University of British Columbia. I teach lessons customized to the goals of the student, whether that involves Royal Conservatory, Canada Conservatory, or not. I believe in the comprehensive study of music and the arts, and that awareness of the world around you, especially in the arts world, begins in our weekly lessons.
I teach students as young as three, as well as adults.
I believe in a holistic approach to music, and acknowledging the role music plays in the world, not only its role within the Arts, but as part of a dialogue that people have with the world around them. A true musician is one who is engaged with the music community, whether that be attending concerts, performing live, or simply discovering and listening to music at home. A good musician is not made only by technically proficient playing, but by awareness, inspiration, and passion. We are not only musicians, but artists.

Outside of teaching I am involved in an improvised music collective, write and perform my own songs under the name Fist Full o' Snacks, play in a Balinese Gamelan Orchestra, run workshops on sound improvisation called Sound Out Loud, and run classes focusing on contemporary composers.

Specialties

Outside of the canonical piano teaching styles, I have been designing programs dedicated to educating young people about contemporary music. These programs include techniques of improvisation, compositional techniques of contemporary composers, and exercises to improve listening skills.

Lesson details

Lessons are either half an hour or one hour long, depending on the level of the student and as well as her or his age. The lessons will be structured based on the needs and goals of the player, so lessons vary greatly from student to student.

Education and Accreditation

I have received my ARCT with the Royal Conservatory in both Performance and Teaching. I have also received my Bachelors of Music through UBC, studying with pianist Terence Dawson. I am MYC Certified. (Music for Young Children.)
I often collaborate with Vancouver New Music in producing Sonic Playground, a workshop series for children.
