About me

I have been teaching piano lessons for 11 years, and have been playing since I was 5 years old. I am active in playing at church, and enjoy performing occasionally for my students at our recitals. I love music, and over the years have developed a special affinity for classical music especially. There were a number of years where I struggled with it, as a lot of students do, but have since found it to be one of the best vehicles in which I express myself, and am drawn to the complexity within the different forms. I love all the different moods you can immerse yourself in, from a crashing Beethoven Sonata, to a serene Satie 'Gymnopedie'. I also enjoy improvising on chord charts, which is primarily what I play at church. I enjoy the freedom of the form and the challenge of playing in harmonies that I wouldn't normally see within my classical playing.

In teaching, my main goal is to help my students become independent musicians. Musicians that, at the end of their time with me, can sit down with a piece of music and be able to figure it out on their own, technically, rhythmically, and musically. I also aim to give students a taste of a wide variety of genres (which is one reason why I love teaching Royal Conservatory. . .there's a little bit of everything), to help them see the wider musical world outside of the Top 40 of the week. I know how much joy I get from being able to sit down and play something, and my earnest desire is to pass that on to my own students.

Specialties

I specialize in teaching the Royal Conservatory curriculum (which may, or may not include exams, depending on what the student's individual goals are), but also love to teach young beginners as well as adults.

Lesson details

Lessons are private, one-on-one with the teacher, starting at half an hour and moving up from there depending on the student's needs. Each lesson consists of some technical training, review of previous material, introduction of new material, and there's always some good music-making and fun to be had!

I have two very young children right now, so my availability is somewhat limited and hinges on childcare, but will do my best to work with you to find a time that is mutually convenient.
