About me

I have been teaching private piano and voice lessons in Williamsburg for the past 18 years, and taught in NY and CA before that. I coordinate the Williamsburg Area Music Teachers group which meets monthly during the school year and sponsors several recitals and a benefit teacher performance each year. I am also a member of the Peninsula Music Teachers Assn. (part of Music Teachers National Assn.) and sing with the Williamsburg Women's Chorus and Choraliers. I coordinate the National Federation of Music Clubs Festivals at Hampton University and the College of William & Mary each year, as well as Cadenza Music Club. My students have plenty of opportunities to perform (or not) through the year. My philosophy of teaching is that MUSIC IS FUN AND CAN BRING OUT THE BEST IN US.

Specialties

I teach all styles and all levels of piano and voice. I prefer voice students to be in middle school or older. I also teach music theory.

Lesson details

Most often for Piano Lessons, we use the Faber & Faber "Piano Adventures" series of books. The music is varied and fun. The technique books are VERY helpful but I don't use those with all beginners. We always use both the Lesson and Theory books; sometimes we add performance and/or "Gold Star" books. For voice, students need to be able to record exercises and songs we do in the lesson. We work on breathing, diction, vocal production/projection, expanding the range and all styles of music.

Education and Accreditation

BS in Music Education as a piano major and voice minor, plus voice study on the graduate level at The Eastman School of Music in Rochester NY. Teaching certificate in NY for music in grades K-12. As stated earlier, I am a member of MTNA, NFMC and local organizations and my students are able to perform in the Federation Festivals annually.
