Dr. Michael R. Trew

Vancouver BC | V6K 2G4

About me

I am an experienced music teacher with a Doctorate in Music and English and 25 years teaching experience. Currently I am available for in-home piano lessons on the West Side of Vancouver, and in the Mt. Pleasant area. I will consider teaching in North Vancouver or West Vancouver if transportation options are simple. Same for Richmond and Oakridge areas. I have openings now and also teach in the summer.

I try to bring a relaxed atmosphere to my teaching, as I realize not all my students will become professional musicians, so I encourage Music Appreciation as much as I can. I can teach all styles, from beginners to advanced, classical to jazz, and will prepare you for RCM exams.

Currently I offer theory lessons and history to satisfy RCM requirements (history by correspondence if required) and am available to help budding composers and song-writers.

My rates are reasonable and similar to others with my qualifications and experience. References are available.

Specialties

I am happy to work with beginners of all ages, and teach all styles. I am also comfortable working with more advanced students and am very good at helping students pass RCM theory and history exams. I love to teach composition, as that is where I get my most valuable inspiration.

Lesson details

I teach weekly lessons in 45min or 1 hr segments - theory requires an extra 15 mins - 1/2 hr, depending on the level being studied. History requires lessons of 1 hr per week - preferably as a 30 hour course . For students wishing to take RCM history exams I recommend taking 2hr segments once a week.
I will teach beginners who are young for 30 mins, but prefer 45 mins as soon as possible. In home lessons are available as well as limited studio sessions.
