About me

Heather Byars earned a Bachelor's Degree in Piano Performance from the University of Montevallo and a Master's Degree in Piano Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Louisville in Kentucky. She has been teaching piano for 25 years including private piano studio, university class piano, and private piano instruction for university students. She is married to Chris Byars, a music teacher and drummer. They have a daughter in the seventh grade at Pizitz Middle School.

Mrs. Byars has lectured and performed at both the 1995 National Conference on Piano Pedagogy and the National Yamaha Education and Technology Conference in 1999. She is an active member of the Music Teacher's National Association (MTNA) and the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC) including their local affiliates. She is also member of Pi Kappa Lambda, the National Music Honor Society and has been listed in Who's Who In American Women. She has contributed articles to professional pedagogy periodicals, and her students continually receive highest ratings and honors in local and state piano competitions.

Mrs. Byars has completed one CD recording. The CD includes a compilation of live performances of works by Robert Schumann, Bela Bartok, Claude Debussy, and Samuel Barber.

Lesson details

Lesson plans are uniquely tailored to meet the needs of each student while concentrating on all the basic elements of musicianship. We select appropriate and interesting repertoire from a pedagogically sound series and supplement it with music of the student's choice. Music theory, ear training, music history, piano technique, and performance practice will all be incorporated. Piano lessons take place in a peaceful home setting in a room reserved for this purpose. While there may be no official code for piano instructors to follow, I have set the standard of always being professional, encouraging, positive, and interested in my students, while guiding them to give their very best effort and reach their highest potential.
