Georgine Stevenson-Aho

Vancouver BC | V5T 4T1

About me

I have been playing piano since I was 8 years old. I began teaching piano when I was 14 as an assistant to my piano teacher. During this time I gained experience teaching technique, scales, sight-reading and ear-training. At age 16 I had completed up to Grade 8 with the Royal Conservatory of Music. I have completed my Jazz piano diploma at Vancouver Community College with a minor in music composition. I have played in several venues around Vancouver performing both original material and background jazz. My philosophy in teaching is to gear lessons to the student while still providing a well-rounded music education. When I play I am inspired by the imagery and mood I have the possibility to create, and when I teach I look to find what inspires the student to play and work with that element to keep music strong in their lives.

Specialties

I specialize in creating a fun, relaxed environment and sharing my passion for music. I love theory and history and I relate it to the songs and technique my student is working on. I really love music, piano and teaching and my goal is to pass off my passion to all my students.

Lesson details

In my lessons I cover all of the essentials to be a well-rounded pianist. When I teach technique, ear-training and theory I incorporate it into the pieces the student is working on to understand why it is important and how it affects the playing itself. I always keep the lessons light and fun so the student won't be discouraged and my highest priority is that the student always enjoys what they are doing. I have recently set up a teaching studio in my apartment that is designed so we can record your pieces as well as learn to play with other instruments I have available.

Education and Accreditation

I have completed my 3rd year in Vancouver Community College's Contemporary and Jazz piano diploma program in April 2012. I am studying jazz piano and improvisation with Alan Matheson and Sharon Minemoto. I have also studied classical piano under Eva Solar-Kinderman and taken one year of Composition, studying under John Korsrud.
