About me

George Paterson Dip. Mus. M.R.U. Jazz Performance

Mr. Paterson began his senior classical piano training with Dr. Lawrence Jones at the University of Brandon where he completed his Royal Conservatory Grade 10. He later studied with Thomas Mansard at the University of Saskatchewan where he studied successfully at the ARCT level.

This study was followed by a four decade career in the music business. Performing full time as a professional in the styles of jazz, blues, R & B and Popular music, Mr. Paterson worked in A Class Night clubs, television, recording and concerts in all of the major cities in Western Canada and many sites in the US.

Returning to further advance his education in the 90’s, Mr. Paterson successfully completed the Jazz Program/Performance at Mount Royal University, Calgary, under the tutelage of Britain’s jazz pianist, Dave Diver. He moved then to San Francisco for three years where he both taught and performed.

Through those times, Mr. Paterson along with his wife Dr. Penny Paterson, raised three sons and they are now enjoying their two year old grand daughter. Family plays a large role in his personal life and has had enormous impact on his ability to show patience and to have the sensibilities needed as a Teacher.

Currently (as well as for the past eight years) Mr. Paterson is a full time teacher at The Port Moody Art Centre, where he teaches all levels of music from beginner to Grade 10. This includes all the relevant theory. His class has had many graduates from Grade 8 RCM - which is a grade twelve High School credit- and Grade 10 RCM, some of whom moved on to work on their Associate degree and one in the Bachelor of Music Program at UBC.

Mr. Paterson enjoys accepting students of all musical interests, ages and levels. Spaces do become available, and you are welcome to inquire about our new beginner fees.
