About me

I have been teaching piano for eight years, instructing students age 4 to adult from beginning to advanced levels. I am pursuing a piano performance degree with an emphasis on pedagogy from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. I also teach general music education and appreciation to grades K-6 at St. Joseph's Elementary School in Waterloo, where I am also a private piano instructor. It is difficult to think of teaching music as a "job" - it is rather a natural part of my everyday life, as I continually strive to expand my own knowledge while searching for the best practice and motivational techniques and the most sound pedagogical instruction.

Specialties

The most unique aspect of my student's learning experience is their exposure to the many facets of music beyond learning repertoire: theory, technique, sightreading, and improvisation are all taught to students to ensure their musical education is comprehensive, and to help them integrate all that music has to offer.

Lesson details

Students are given opportunities at each lesson to step beyond the pages of their lesson books to create their own music and improve their listening skills. Students become well-rounded musicians capable of many musical skills who become fully engaged in their developing musicianship. Sightreading and improvisation make frequent appearances during lessons!

Theory, which can be an intimidating and overwhelming subject for music students, is always explained carefully and clearly, at a pace the student can follow. A solid foundation is laid that allows students to continually build on their knowledge of the components of music, so that when the time comes to learn chords and key signatures, students don't become lost!

Technique is the physical study of playing piano and is strongly emphasized throughout each lesson. Teaching the student to relax their muscles and to maintain a hand and wrist position that allows them to play their music to its full artistic potential speeds up student progress and allows for the discovery of musical abilities that are present within every student's being!
