About me

A native of Hong Kong, Ely Chan was active as a performer, accompanist, and teacher. He had his recital broadcasted on Radio Hong Kong in 1979, prior to his studies with Beatrice Beauregard and Mack McCray on scholarship at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where he received both of his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in piano performance. He has also performed in master classes with world-renowned pianists such as Leon Fleisher, John Perry, Anton Kuerti, and Angela Hewitt.

Ely Chan was the recipient of numerous awards from Hong Kong Schools of Music Festival during his youth. He started teaching piano even prior to his graduation from high school, and his pupils began winning trophies consistently at music festivals ever since the first year of his teaching career.

After moving to Canada in 1990, Ely Chan quickly established an active studio in Coquitlam, and his students have started winning trophies and scholarship consistently at local music festivals since 1991, and later in provincial and national competitions. They have also excelled in Conservatory Examinations and received trophies every year from the B.C. Registered Music Teachers; Association for attaining the highest marks. In addition, his students have been awarded medals for excellence and scholarships by the Conservatory Canada since 1998 for attaining the highest marks in all of B.C. Many of them have gone on to study music on scholarships at prestigious schools such as University of British Columbia, University of Alberta, and McGill University. in 2008, Ely Chan received the Tom and Miggsie Lawson National Teachers' Scholarship, awarded to six of Conservatory Canada's top teachers for their achievements.

Ely Chan has served as an adjudicator for music festivals such as BCRMTA Student Performers' Guild Festival in Vancouver, and has presented some pedagogic workshops for piano teachers. Currently, he is a committee member of North Fraser Music Festival, and his been appointed the piano coordinator to CDMF Performing Arts Festival. He is an active member of the B.C.
