About me

I have been playing the piano since I was 8 years old; I have always loved the piano. I have played for large choirs, small ensembles, jazz bands, weddings, christmas parties, etc. I was a worship leader for some years.
I have been teaching piano for over 2o years at private schools, as well as maintaining a private studio.
My philosophy in music is to inspire a child to learn. I teach theory, note reading, composition, applied performance. I would love for each of my students to take this wonderful journey of music with me and see how it can enhance their lives. I think learning music makes a child blossom and gives them the key to a kind of language only music and learners of music comprehend. It opens your whole inner world.

Specialties

My specialty is my patience and ability to properly explain to young children all the facets of piano and music learning. I believe more in gentle encouragement than using punitive tactics. I'm very patient and willing to use versatile ways to make students understand each concept we are studying. All students are not alike, nor do they learn the same way. I analyze each of my students personality and accommodate each one according to his/her own learning style.

Lesson details

Beginning students through level 1 receive a 1/2 hour lesson. Students entering level 2 and above receive a 45 minute lesson. I teach from a method book, theory, technique book, and performance book. I also have supplementary material ranging from pop songs, jazz, gospel, to classical, ragtime, and folk songs. I like my students to be exposed to pieces from a diversified repertoire. I also incorporate composition in my teaching. Some students will do this as a mere lesson homework; some will actually discover a talent for writing music from this. Either way, I feel composition gives a student a much better understanding of how music works. It can be challenging at times, however, I feel it can also stir creativity in students.

Education and Accreditation

I have a Piano Pedagogy Certificate. I'm also a member of the National Piano Guild and MTNA.
