About me

Currently David teaches in the "Mission" area of Kelowna on a beautiful grand piano. He also teaches privately in students homes throughout the Okanagan*.(* In home rates slightly higher than studio rates)

He has been teaching piano for almost 40 years. He has taught beginners to ARCT level in the Royal Conservatory of Music. As a professional musician, David has accompanied professional choirs,instrumentalists and has performed with the Prince George Symphony Orchestra on many occasions. He has also directed choirs and co-directed the musical "Forever Plaid". David has entertained audiences by playing for musical theatre and variety shows in Barkerville and Wells B.C. and for the Kelowna Summer Theatre Workshop shows. He has also performed throughout the Okanagan at "Summerhill Winery", "Quails Gate Winery", "Ancient Hill Winery", "Carver's Lounge" at Big White He has also performed with "MONIFUNK", a Funk/Mowtown & Blues Band. MONIFUNK has performed often at "The Blue Gator" and throughout the Okanagan Valley. Currently, David performs in a musical duo called "DOUBLE SHARP". This is a saxophone/piano duo with his friend and colleague, Curtis Kieres. "DOUBLE SHARP" is in demand throughout the Okanagan Valley.

David feels that learning the piano develops discipline, co-ordination and creativity. Playing the piano in public helps develop a love & passion for performing and sharing music. This helps individuals with personal confidence and a desire to learn and perform more.

David specializes in teaching the Royal Conservatory of Music method as well as teaching jazz, pop, rock and improvisation.

Lesson details

David teaches beginners to ARCT level in the Royal Conservatory of Music, teaching either 30, 45 and 60 minute lessons. He incorporates music theory into his piano lessons while teaching either the Royal Conservatory of Music approach, or uses method books & other materials to teach jazz & popular music as well as improvisation; often combining the Royal Conservatory of Music approach with the supplemental material. David also feels that a good technical facility is a necessity when learning music, and he has several positive approaches to piano technique that he incorporates.

Education and Accreditation

David has a Bachelor of Music in Piano Performance Degree from Western Washington University. He has also been a Registered Music Teacher for many years. His professors were Ford Hill(PhD), Bruce Pullan, Robert Scandrett, and advisors were Edward Parker (where David started teaching piano and received referrals from) David has adjudicated music festivals in B.C.'s Central Interior and has studied & performed at the Banff School of Fine Arts. He has also been involved with many piano workshops and clinics throughout B.C.

AWARDS & ACCOMPLISHMENTS:

- Many of my students have achieved either honours or first class honours in Royal Conservatory of Music Exams as well as placing highly in Music Festivals
- Set a world record playing piano for 53 hours & 37 minutes non-stop to raise money for the United Way
- Arthur Hicks $1000 piano scholarship from W.W.U.
- Actor/Pianist/Director for musical production "Forever Plaid"
- Composer/Arranger for Childrens musical "In the Land of Make Believe"
- Brahms 2 piano major work with Paul Dykstra in Edmonton, Alta, and Quesnel, B.C.
- Pianist for PG Theatre Workshop (Excalibur Productions) (1990's)
- PGSO- Mozart Triple Piano Concerto (1994)
- Pianist/Actor/Entertainer for "Barkerville/Wells" Shows (2002)
