About me

Craig Stevenson (ARCT, MA) is a classically trained piano teacher and performer. He studied piano and music education at University of Toronto, where he earned his Master's degree. He studied privately with Andrew Burashko and Patricia Parr, both renowned pianists, and has taught piano to children and adults for over 18 years. Craig's students have won piano competitions and are noted for their strong technique and expressive style. He teaches the Vengerova method, which emphasises six techniques that are crucial to a powerful tone: non-percussive touch, flexible wrist, accents, quiet upper arm, relaxation, and weight. His teaching philosphy stems from the advice of his first piano teacher, the late Stella G. Brimo. When he complained that Chopin's first etude was too difficult, she replied, "even Horowitz would have trouble with that piece if he played it like you do!" Her point was that a good technique is really a shortcut, and that even the most difficult piece can be simplified with the righ approach. Whether Craig is teaching beginners, intermediates, or advanced students, his primary goal is to help them eliminate difficulty. To play well is to play naturally; to play naturally is to play easily.
