About me

I have been playing piano since the age of 4 and have loved it every moment. I first began teaching when I was roughly 14 years old. I worked with four young boys full of energy and eagerness to learn. I will admit that sometimes it was hard to get them to focus but I always managed to find ways to connect to them. I enjoy learning what music my students are listening to and what they would like to be able to play. I do my best to make lessons fun and exciting while making sure to slip in technique, scales and theory (which I know many students don't enjoy). I am currently entering my 4th year of my B.A. in Jazz Piano Performance at Vancouver Community College. I have a music diploma from VCC and I am also working towards my Grade 10/ARCT from the RCM.

Specialties

I have always enjoyed working with kids. I thrive off the high energy and love to be excited with the kids about what they are learning. I am a high energy person myself and I believe this helps my students warm up to me and encourage a willingness within them to practice and learn because they find it fun. I like bringing games and other specific teaching techniques to the class to make sure everyone is in a good learning environment. I have learned from my own learning history that if one is not enjoying or having fun in lessons one will not learn.

Lesson details

Obviously this is different for every student but I believe that in a one hour lesson I am capable of effectively covering all the basics of music as well as specific piano techniques. Piano performance, technique, theory and ear training are my main focuses although I also enjoy working with students who have an interest in improvisation or composition.
