About me

I was born in Toronto, Canada and at the age of eight began my musical education on the piano. My studies were eventually continued at the Toronto Conservatory of Music where I earned musical merits up to the eighth level.

Specialties

My Pedagogial Specialties employ the Alfred, Bastien and Faber piano methods primarily as well as any other methods the student might prefer. Included in every lesson is a strong grounding in scales and musical theory. I wish to hear any music that the student learns regardless of whether or not I have taught that piece.
TEACHING PHILOSOPHY:
My primary goal is to teach the student how to learn. Teaching must be matched to the student's learning style not learning matched to the teacher's style. I teach music, rather than just how to play the piano.
SOME MAXIMS THAT GUIDE MY INTERACTION WITH MY PUPILS;
If you don't understand it's my fault, not yours. It's my job to teach you in a way you understand. Attempting is often more important than succeeding.
Music is a joy. Music lessons should be fun. They are a privilege, not a punishment or a requirement. If we're not having fun, somehting is wrong. I encourage exploration and creativity. I show the student respect and affection.

Lesson details

All lessons are one half hour in length. They are given on a Storey and Clarke baby grand piano. I will recommend the books to be used based on the student's needs and attempt to keep these materials to a minimum. I will use as many of a transfer student's old books as I deem beneficial for the student but may still require an additional book or books as a supplement. No two lessons are exactly alike. We do not always start out with scales or theory or performance - although all these are covered during the lesson time.

Education and Accreditation

I attended the University of Toronto, Toronto Conservatory of Music where I earned a Certificate in piano proficiency at a high level. I continued my studies at the Saddleback College in Mission Viejo where I successfully completed all the requirements in Pedagogy and was accredited with membership in the Music Teachers' Association of California wherein I am an active member. I have played at many recitals and at my parish church.
