About me

From the age of four, I have been fortunate to have a progression of wonderful teachers, both in piano and voice.
My piano teachers were concerned with the individual - the size and ability of individual hands, technical needs, progress according to ability, exposure to a wide range of repertoire, understanding of composers and their times, hearing music rather than just playing notes - developing a consumate musician who was more than just a piano player.

After careful tutoring of a young voice by my mother, I studied with teachers who understood how to teach the physiology of singing, languages, and a broad repertoire suitable for different voices.

As an attentive student, I was able to learn from each approach and have applied the lessons to my own teaching.
Through continued attendance at seminars, presentations, and workshops, I have continued to hone my teaching skills, continue awareness of new repertoire, and enjoy association with my peers in music instruction.

Every student's needs are different and must be approached individually even though there are specific areas that need to be addressed with each one. Piano students are age five through adult; levels are beginning through advanced. They include students new to music, returning students, adults who always wanted to study, and students who needed a change.

Students who really want to learn and parents who will support the well-rounded program will enjoy the variety of repertoire, computer theory and composition, organized practice instructions, ease of memorization.

Vocal students are approached according to age, knowledge of music, ability, and other variables.

Students have performance opportunities through two studio recitals a year, group classes, Piano Guild auditions, Encore festivals, and UMTA chapter recitals. Students are encouraged and prepared to perform in school, church, and community activities.

I work with great families; my students make excellent rapid progress.

Lesson details

Lessons are organized with specific assignments to be prepared each week. Students learn how to dissect the music for rapid preparation and memorization. As students advance, they learn how to guide their own practice by setting goals that lead to memorized performances of various styles of music, to refreshing earlier learned repertoire, and to presenting solid cofident performances. The ultimate goal is for students to be able to guide their own learning with future independent study.
Learning is based in solid understanding of scales, chords, cadences, and arpeggios; of historical styles; of correct pedal technique; of the subtle nuances that turn the black blobs on white paper into music!
