Amy J K Teo-Poh

Coquitlam BC | V3B 6R3

About me

My teaching experience began in Singapore. For some years, I was employed as a piano teacher at a music school and at a Baptist church. I served extensively as pianist, organist and also accompanist at many performances of choirs and soloists. After emigrating to Canada, I completed three Canadian music qualifications. Besides teaching privately, I worked at G & G Music (Maple Ridge) for eight years before teaching in Coquitlam after my move in 2005.

My inspiration comes from my students: their interest and love of music, their motivation, progress and their commendable achievements in music examinations. I treasure the relationships which I have with my students and which could in many cases be for up to eight or ten years. I appreciate the formation of friendship with parents and colleagues as this enriches my personal life and music career.

Besides being a church-worship pianist, organist and church choir member, I love challenges and continually seek to further my music qualifications to upgrade my knowledge, skills and abilities in all areas of music. I have recently, in my pursuit of a music degree, successfully completed (with the award of a full two-year tuition scholarship) the first-year of a two-year Diploma in Performing Arts which is a University Transfer music program.

Specialties

I specialize in teaching Classical music especially in preparing students for RCM examinations from Beginner to Grade 10 levels. I am able also to teach other areas of music: spiritual music (church hymns and choruses) with improvisations and popular tunes and other forms of music for pleasure. Theory is included in lessons, if desired.

I have also had the invaluable experience of teaching an autistic student who began lessons as a beginner and has since completed his music studies at RCM Grade 8 in practical and theory with the achievements of first-class honours in both categories. I love challenges and seek always to motivate students to strive to do their best in their music studies.
