About me

I believe in the old-fashioned method of encouraging creativity as well as literacy in learning music. Hence, elements of theory are taught as it applies to the building blocks of music - the old adage that's it's better to teach someone to fish than to give them a fish!! I also ask students to be pro-active about their musical choices of what they want to be able to play. And i leave it up to the individual to decide his/her own level of seriousness/commitment/motivation. I prefer to teach people who already have learned fundamentals and are ready to do some creative exploration and build on the basics they've already learned...

Specialties

Applying traditional harmony (chording) to contemporary forms like blues and rock, reggae, etc. Also beginner's jazz and chart reading. And self-accompaniment for vocalists.

Lesson details

I find out where you are and where you want to go, and start from there...if you want to read, that's fine, if you don't, that's fine too...Together we find out how you best learn what you want to learn (that's within my capacity). The student decides on periodicity and length of lesson - basically, my job is to give you what you want...

Education and Accreditation

Lot's of on the job education!!! Nothing like performing to get your skills up to snuff - after doing an Associate in classical piano performance, my aspiration were for performance rather tha teaching, so I went back into private studies another 4 years with a teacher who bridged me beyond classical into improv and chart reading. I've been a professional performer since 1980 in a great variety of genres and settings, from theatre to lounge, rock band to jazz trio, and loads of solo piano!!!
